If you’re old enough to remember the song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, performed famously by Gordon Lightfoot, sank during a storm 49 years ago this month. In Lake Superior. Twenty nine men perished that ill-fated trip. The vessel carried taconite, an iron ore, from Duluth, Minn., to Detroit, Toledo and other Great Lakes ports.
he Edmund Fitzgerald was built at the request of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin beginning on August 7, 1957 at the cost of approximately $8 million. The task to construct the 729-foot, 13,632 gross ton vessel was assigned to Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ecorse, Michigan. Due to its size, the Edmund Fitzgerald was often referred to as the Queen of the Lakes. The title then passed to the Murray Bay in September 1959, which was 730-feet in length.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was christened June 7, 1958 and chartered to the Columbia Transportation Division of Oglebay Norton Company of Cleveland, Ohio. During its 17 years of operation, the Fitzgerald set season haul records on six different occasions. Its record for a single load was 27,402 long tons set in 1969.
